2012 The Conspirator's Reserve

SILVER MEDAL WINNER - 2015 Sunset International Wine Competition

The Fairbairn Vineyard is a tiny three acre site, tucked away in a virtually inaccessible area about a mile from our estate vineyard in the Templeton Gap. The vineyard was planted by our dear friend Robin Fairbairn, who passed away just a few months after this vintage was harvested. The vineyard is dry farmed and the vines head trained. With no trellises or irrigation, the vineyard has a very wild and natural feel that is very evident in the brambly fruit. In some ways, the vines reflect the character of the man who planted them - strong and self sufficient and with a brash, adventurous streak. We hope we captured some of that spirit in the wine and we hope you will join us in raising a glass to Robin.

Dry farmed vines typically produce fruit with an intense flavor profile. In their struggle to survive, the vines yield tiny quantities of small berries, busting with complex flavors. To honor the unique nature of the fruit from this unconventional vineyard, we used a gentle hand and minimal intervention. Aged in oak for 19 months, we used one new French barrel and two neutral American barrels. No fining, no filtering. Deep purple in color with dark blackberry and blueberry flavors. The wine exhibits earthy notes, combined with a hint of pepper and a smoky aroma. Drink now or cellar confidently - we anticipate a long, full life for this limited production, single vineyard reserve.
