2008 The Assassin Cabernet Sauvignon

90 POINTS - Affairs of the Vine 2011 Cabernet Shootout.

The Assassin is a classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark and brooding in character, bold and complex from the nose to the finish. Perfect with beef or lamb dishes and stronger cheeses. The wine has a rich intensity and tremendous focus. On the nose, generous spicy blackberry frames nuances of cocoa, violet, mineral and vanilla. A brilliant burst of acidity on entry falls into a silky mid-palate and finishes long, with supple tannins and juicy brambleberry. This wine exudes lots of depth and stays true to the real spirit of Napa cabernet. It is already showing very well and will continue to age gracefully 10-‐12+ yrs.

The Assassin scored 90 points in the Affairs Of The Vine 2011 Cabernet Competition.

The Assassin is a single vineyard cab, sourced from the Ink Grade Vineyard. The vineyard sits above the 1400 ft inversion layer that marks the periphery of the Howell Mountain subAVA. The high elevation causes cooler daytime temperatures and slightly warmer evening temperatures than those of the valley floor. Bud break is about a month later than the lower elevations but the vineyard basks in warm sun late into the growing season, while most of the Napa valley is shrouded in fog. The soils consist of rich red clay and decomposed volcanic ash – a combination poor in nutrients and able to retain very little water. The result is stressed vines, producing small berries with deeply structured spice notes and robust tannins. Yields are limited to 2 to 2.5 tons per acre..
